Remember to Thank Our Heroes on November 11th — It’s Veterans Day!

November 11th marks a significant day for all former members of our armed forces who served our nation well. It’s Veterans Day!

This is the perfect time for Americans to think about the sacrifices and challenges our heroes had to go through to keep us safe and preserve our freedoms.

This public holiday should remind of our obligation to acknowledge the heroism of our veterans and pay our respects to them. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day is dedicated not only to our fallen warriors but also to the living ones.

The date, November 11th, marks the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended World War I in 1918.

On this special occasion, festivals and parades are held while people would visit the Tomb of the Unknowns to honor our fallen heroes. Many places would display the American flag at half-mast. There will also be a two-minute period of silence at 11 in the morning throughout the country.

The 7 Ways of Honoring the Veterans in Your Community

If you have friends, family members, co-workers, or acquaintances who were once members of the military, this is the moment to show them how proud and lucky you are to have known them. Let them see how much you genuinely appreciate their service through these actions:

  1. Hang out with them.

Take your veteran family member or friend out for an afternoon coffee or invite them over to your home for lunch. Spending even a few moments of your time with them can mean so much for them.

  1. Surprise them with homemade delicacies.

Surprise gifts of delicacies are things that can automatically turn around someone’s gloomy day. Bake a batch of healthy cookies, place them in a box, and make your way to a veteran’s house in your neighborhood and hand over your gift to them.

  1. Buy a meal for a homeless veteran.

It’s heartbreaking to see vets living on the streets, begging for money and food. If you see a homeless veteran, offer them a meal and thank them for their service. You might also want to buy them a hat or blanket.

  1. Volunteer at a veterans organization.

Volunteering your service to a veteran-focused nonprofit is another way of showing your gratitude and appreciation to our vets. Use this day to assist the staff in organizing their outreach programs or with just about anything they need help with.

  1. Write a letter to a veteran.

While sending handwritten notes may be considered obsolete these days, it’s still more impactful than sending printed or typewritten messages using the internet. The fact that you have to put in extra effort to write the letter by your own hand speaks for itself. If you want to send your thank-you letter anonymously to an anonymous veteran, you can sign up at A Million Thanks nonprofit or leave your letter to a local veteran nursing home facility.

  1. Visit a VA hospital or a nearby nursing home facility.

Many veterans no longer have their families with them. Sometimes, all they need to feel good is a visit from a caring stranger. Be that stranger. Spend as much time as you want with them. Listen to them as they recall their favorite memories. Make them laugh by cracking jokes and express your gratitude for their heroic acts.

  1. Fly the U.S. flag.

There’s no better way to show how proud you are of our former and active-duty troops by putting up the Stars and Stripes outside your home. Everyone else in your neighborhood might just follow suit.

Help Transform the Lives of Needy Vets with a Vehicle Donation

Saving the best idea for last, you might want to donate a no-longer-needed vehicle to Veteran Car Donations. Doing so will allow you to become a hero to our nation’s heroes. You’ll make it possible for them to overcome the challenges that veterans face when transitioning to civilian life.

We’ll convert your auto donation into a fund-generating tool by selling it at auction. All proceeds will go directly to our nonprofit partners, helping them in their delivery of life-enriching programs for the benefit of disadvantaged veterans and their families. These programs provide their beneficiaries with free quality health care, financial aid, housing assistance, employment opportunities, family support, educational scholarships, psychotherapy services, and many other benefits.

As a donor, you’ll get to enjoy valuable rewards, one of which is your entitlement to a top tax deduction, which you can claim in the next tax season.

You also don’t need to pay for our pickup and towing service. We offer this for free in all parts of the United States.

Even more precious than these material rewards is the awesome satisfaction you’ll experience in knowing that your car donation will be used to help transform the lives of our suffering heroes.

We welcome pretty much all types of vehicles, including those that are no longer in good shape. We take old sedans, vans, trucks, motorcycles, RVs, campers, boats, golf carts, scooters, and even farm equipment. Head over to this page to know the rest.

If you’re interested to learn more about our vehicle donation program, including our donation process, vehicle removal service, and tax deductions, all the information you need is on our FAQs page.
