Touch the Hearts of Our Troops — It’s Military Appreciation Month!

May is a special month for active-duty and former members of our armed forces. It’s Military Appreciation Month — a time when these courageous men and women are recognized and honored for their service to our nation.

May celebrates several events honoring the members of our Armed Forces, such as Loyalty Day, V-E Day, Armed Forces Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, and Memorial Day. As such, Congress decided to mark May as Military Appreciation Month. The first observance took place in 1999, with Senator John McCain making the proclamation.

During this month, the President usually takes time to remind the nation on how our service members have willingly placed their lives on the line to keep our country safe and our freedoms secured.

While Military Appreciation Month is not a national holiday, many cities celebrate with picnics and parties to acknowledge active soldiers and veterans in their communities. Many local businesses offer great deals for current and former military members. Some sports events provide free game tickets to veterans and military families.

6 Simple Ways to Thank Our Troops and Veterans

If it weren’t for our military personnel who risked their lives to save ours, we wouldn’t be where we are right now. Showing them our heartfelt gratitude is the least we can do for them. Here are six gestures you can make to make sure they get the message:

  1. Help out a veteran.

Do you know someone who has served in the military? If you do, offer to perform their chores for them even for a day. Whether you’re volunteering to take the trash out, wash their dishes, or walk their dogs, you’ll surely make their day.

  1. Thank a service member personally.

Getting a simple “thank you” from strangers can mean the world to our troops and veterans. You can even go the extra mile by treating them for coffee or by writing them a poem of admiration.

  1. Attend a community event.

Join your fellow citizens in celebrating the lives of your hometown heroes by attending a service or a local parade. Don’t forget to invite your friends and family to tag along!

  1. Do volunteer work.

If you know of a veterans nursing home, hospice, or food bank in your area, ask if they need volunteers. Not only will you be helping the unfortunate vets in your community, but you’ll also lessen the burden of the staff.

  1. Assemble care packages.

Support active-duty service members by assembling items for the United Service Organizations Care Package Program. Give these stationed soldiers a taste of home when you help pack and deliver a range of essentials — from hygienic products to healthy snacks.

  1. Spread the word about military discounts.

Expect lots of stores and restaurants to offer military discounts for the whole month of May. Whenever you come across any attractive deals, be sure to share them on your social media platform. Encourage everyone to share this information with families who have military members.

A Meaningful Way to Observe Military Appreciation Month

Probably the best way to show your appreciation to our nation’s heroes is by donating a vehicle you no longer need to Veteran Car Donations. Doing so will allow you to help our struggling veterans live normal lives once again.

We’ll auction off your donated vehicle and transfer the proceeds to our veteran-focused charity partners. The funding helps these IRS-certified 501(c)3 nonprofits in providing their veteran beneficiaries and their families with financial assistance, free medical treatment, employment opportunities, family support, and other essential services.

You’ll also benefit from your donation since it will entitle you to receive a substantial tax deduction in the next tax season. Moreover, we’ll provide you with our free towing service at a date, time, and place of your choice. We can pick up your vehicle from any location within the United States since our vehicle donation program covers all 50 states.

You can donate not just a car but nearly any other type of vehicle regardless of its condition.
