It’s Time to Honor Our Service Members Deployed Abroad
Thousands of our troops are deployed overseas as the United States maintains the largest active troop presence abroad of any country in the world.
While protecting our country’s interests abroad and defending the free world are such rewarding experiences that our troops will forever be proud of, life overseas can get lonely and depressing, especially since they’re away from their families.
U.S. troop deployments don’t happen only when there’s an ongoing war or conflict overseas. Everyone in our military is bound to serve in a foreign land at some during their career. In most cases, an American soldier spends from 90 days to 15 months on foreign soil.
To honor our troops who are serving overseas, Shelle Michaels Aberle of North Dakota petitioned North Dakota Governor John Hoevento in 2006 to set a day aside to honor these men and women. The governor approved the idea and proclaimed the state’s first Day of the Deployed on October 26, 2006. October 26th was chosen for the date in honor of Shelle’s cousin, LTC David Hosna, who had been deployed to Iraq. The day was Hosna’s birthday.
Five years later, the U.S. Congress decided to transform North Dakota’s Day of the Deployed into a national day to honor all deployed service members and their families as well.
On this special day, we are encouraged to pay tribute to the members of our armed forces who have been stationed overseas. It’s the perfect opportunity to show them our support for all the sacrifices they’ve made and are still making for the sake of our nation.
Simple Ways to Celebrate the National Day of the Deployed
You don’t have to know someone personally from the military to be able to take part in this remembrance event. Posting a simple “thank you” note on social media addressed to our troops abroad can already make a difference.
However, if you want to do more than that, here are six other simple ways of touching the hearts of our overseas troops:
- Deliver a care package.
Our service members abroad would be glad to receive care packages, so why not spend the day assembling and shipping a package for our deployed service members? You can include items like books, toiletries, playing cards, and of course, snacks that are delicious and nutritious at the same time. You might want to decorate the box, too — if you’re feeling creative!
- Mail appreciation letters.
A short letter of gratitude can mean the world to a deployed soldier, especially if it’s written straight from the heart. If you have kids, have them write such letters as well. Perhaps, they can draw some hearts to make our heroes smile.
- Send prepaid calling cards.
Another way to lift the spirits of our troops overseas is by sending them prepaid calling cards. Doing so makes it possible for them to call home at zero cost.
- Offer to perform chores for a military family.
Extend a helping hand to the family of a deployed service member by asking to finish some of their household tasks or run a few errands for them. Step in to babysit, cook meals, clean the yard, wash the dishes, or fold laundry — anything to ease their burden.
- Surprise a military family with a special treat.
Let them know how much you appreciate them for being so supportive of their military loved one based overseas. You can bake a box of cupcakes and leave it on their front door. If you want, you can invite them over to your place for lunch.
- Volunteer to a military-focused nonprofit.
Offer your time and service to a nonprofit organization that’s dedicated to assisting our active-duty troops and veterans alike. You can help in raising funds, organizing an event, or doing any task in one of their activities.
Here’s a Sure-Fire Way of Making a Difference in the Lives of Our Heroes
The National Day of the Deployed is intended to honor not only our active-duty troops based abroad but also veterans who were once stationed overseas. Sadly, many of our former service members are currently struggling with homelessness, unemployment, disabilities, and mental and physical illnesses.
You can help improve the living conditions of these veterans by donating an unwanted vehicle to us at Veteran Car Donations. When you do that, you’ll give them opportunities to finally experience living a decent and dignified life.
We’ll auction off your donated vehicle and use the proceeds to support the life improvement programs and services being provided by our veteran-focused charity partners. These IRS-approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations provide deserving veterans with free quality health care, financial aid, housing assistance, employment opportunities, family support, educational scholarships, psychotherapy services, and many other benefits.
As our way of repaying you for your generosity, we’ll mail you the tax-deductible sales receipt of your car within days after it gets sold. This receipt will entitle you to claim a top tax deduction in the next tax season.
We’ll also haul your car away at a time and date of your choice, and don’t worry, it won’t cost you a single dime. We offer free pickup and towing services in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia.
Best of all, you’ll get to experience the satisfaction of knowing that you’ll be helping transform the lives of our suffering heroes.
You can donate almost any type of vehicle regardless of its age or condition. Aside from cars, we also accept RVs, motorcycles, boats, golf carts, trucks, planes, and more. Learn the rest here.
