6 Simple Steps to Do It Yourself

Battery corrosion could be a possible cause of your car’s poor performance. It impacts your battery life and can damage your air conditioning unit and electrical wiring if left unchecked.

If you maintain your car regularly, you can easily spot when corrosion is building. That’s when you see a white, green, or blue-tinged covering around your vehicle’s battery terminals, battery posts, or battery cables. Corrosion impedes your battery’s effectiveness.

To save you a trip to your mechanic, which could cause you to shell out some amount, you can opt to remove battery corrosion on your own. Veteran Car Donations shares these easy steps:

  1. Disconnect your battery cable.

Make sure to disconnect the negative battery cable before the positive one to ensure that you won’t get electrocuted. Remove the battery from the vehicle to be doubly safe.

  1. Check the battery cables.

Inspect your battery cables if they show any signs of damage like corrosion, fraying, splinters, peeling, or cracking. If these are present, replace these cables immediately because they may be the reason your engine is not starting properly.

  1. Remove battery corrosion on the battery and its terminals.

You can remove corrosion on the battery in two ways: In the first method, you spray a commercial-grade battery cleaner on the corroded portions of the battery. Make sure the chemical does not come into contact with your vehicle’s paint as it might cause damage.

In the second method, you mix 250 ml of water with a tablespoon of baking soda to make a solution to remove the corrosion. Simply brush the solution on the affected portions to remove the corrosion.

  1. Rinse and dry.

Rinse the battery and the cable ends with clean water and let them dry.

  1. Take preventive steps against corrosion.

You can apply anti-corrosion pads to protect your battery posts. You can alternatively apply petroleum jelly to the battery terminals to achieve the same result.

  1. Reconnect your battery.

Once you’re done with the entire process, reconnect your battery to your car by connecting the positive battery cable before the negative one.

Are Your Car Woes Piling Up? We Can Help!

If your car’s battery is the least of your concerns, if your auto requires extensive repairs that would cost you a fortune, you might want to reconsider hanging on to that vehicle. If you’re now inclined to dispose of it, we at Veteran Car Donations would like to offer you a hassle-free and cost-free way to free yourself from the trouble that vehicle is causing you. All you have to do is donate that car to us for the benefit of the disadvantaged and suffering veterans in your community.

Once we get hold of your auto, we’ll have it fixed before putting it up for auction. We’ll then use the proceeds to support the life improvement programs for veterans of our nonprofit partners. These IRS-certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations are dedicated to helping former U.S. service members who are homeless and jobless as well as those who are suffering from disabilities and serious illnesses, including mental health conditions.

Our charity partners use the funding we give them to provide their beneficiaries with housing and financial assistance, employment and livelihood opportunities, family support, free quality health care and medical treatment, psychotherapy services, and other services meant to improve their living conditions.

Your charitable contribution will also benefit you in more ways than one. Aside from getting our free vehicle towing service wherever you are in the country, your donation will entitle you to claim the maximum tax deduction in the next tax season.
