Get to Know the 3 Top Federal Food Assistance Programs
It can be easy to believe that our service members are well compensated for keeping our nation safe. However, the truth is that many military families out there are struggling to make ends meet. Some don’t even know where their next meal will come from.
Food insecurity refers to the lack of consistent access to food to support an active and healthy lifestyle. This problem often affects military families who experience frequent mandatory moves, occupational licensing issues for military spouses, and low pay scales for enlisted members. If left unaddressed, food insecurity can negatively impact military readiness as it potentially leads to health issues for service members.
Fortunately, the United States government and many private organizations are aware of this pressing concern. As a result, they’ve created various food assistance programs to help affected military members and their families.
Are Military Members Eligible for Federal Food Assistance?
Yes. Federal food assistance is available for all eligible military families. Service members can apply for the program at the responsible office of their military units. Several food assistance programs even offer online applications.
What Are the Federal Food Assistance Programs for Military Families?
Veteran Car Donations has compiled the three top federal food assistance programs for military families:
SNAP is a program of the Department of Agriculture that was created to assist families in need of food, including underserved military families. Deserving individuals can avail themselves of food assistance based on their income and household size.
A military family’s income must be within a certain range to be considered eligible for SNAP. As a general rule, the organization excludes combat pay, hostile fire pay, and imminent danger pay from the evaluation of an applicant’s qualifications. However, their Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) will be considered when determining their food assistance eligibility.
For example, if you’re stationed in a low-cost area where your BAH is relatively low, you may be able to get into the food stamp program. However, being stationed in a high-cost state or area usually translates to high BAH, which may render you ineligible for the food stamp program.
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, or WIC, is a food assistance program aimed at helping low-income families with pregnant mothers and children below the age of 5. Qualified military families are provided with vouchers that they can use to buy items such as baby food, bread, milk, cheese, juice, peanut butter, fresh fruit, vegetables, and cereals.
Unlike the SNAP, the approving committee for the WIC program may not factor in the BAH payments for your eligibility. Consequently, many military families may qualify for this program more than SNAP. Families with military members stationed abroad can also qualify for WIC.
The Free and Reduced Lunch Programs, managed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), are designed to help children buy nutritious and low-cost meals in public and nonprofit private schools or child development centers on-base and off-base. They provide nutritious low-cost or free meals to children each school day.
Families registered in SNAP are automatically eligible for the Free and Reduced Lunch Programs. Those interested in participating in the program must meet the eligibility criteria, which include being a member of a family earning less than 130% of the federal poverty level in their area.
Many Veterans Also Badly Need Assistance
If some military families need food assistance, how much more it’s needed by veterans who are living in miserable conditions?
You can do something easy to help them. Simply donate any vehicle you no longer need to us at Veteran Car Donations. We’ll use your donation to uplift the lives of the disadvantaged former service members in your community.
Our team will put your car up for auction, with the proceeds going to the reputable military and veteran nonprofit organizations that are in partnership with us. These IRS-certified 501(c)(3) nonprofits are committed to helping veterans who are homeless and impoverished, those who can’t find decent jobs to support themselves and their families, and those with service-connected disabilities and serious illnesses, including mental disorders.
Our charity partners use the funding we give them to provide deserving veterans with housing and financial assistance, employment and livelihood opportunities, family support, free quality health care and medical treatment, psychotherapy services, scholarships, and many other services meant to uplift their lives.
To repay you for your generous contribution, we’ll promptly mail you the 100% tax-deductible sales receipt of your car. This will entitle you to claim the maximum tax deduction in the next tax season. The amount you can claim will be based on your vehicle’s selling price or value.
Additionally, you will have the privilege of having your vehicle picked up for free. Just let us know when and where you want it hauled off, and we’ll coordinate with a licensed towing company to get the job done. As long as you live within the United States, you can avail yourself of our vehicle removal service anytime you prefer.
Above all, you’ll have the ultimate pleasure and satisfaction of doing something extraordinary that can help transform the lives of our nation’s heroes.
We accept almost all types of vehicles regardless of age or condition. Head over to this page for a comprehensive list of the vehicles that qualify for our donation program.
