Protect Your Head from Harm!
Brain injuries happen all the time. While you may not have suffered a brain injury, accidents that cause such injury can happen to anyone — cyclists and pedestrians being hit by cars, athletes getting brain concussions, soldiers getting exposed to weapons detonation, and people, particularly the elderly, stumbling and hitting their heads on hard objects such as the concrete floor.
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of brain health and bring awareness to debilitating injuries. Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can wreak havoc on our physical and mental abilities, dramatically impacting our quality of life. It’s difficult enough just trying to figure out what’s wrong after experiencing a head injury — many aren’t even aware of how it occurred to them.
That’s why it’s crucial to use this month as an opportunity to educate ourselves on the causes of brain injuries and explore ways to reduce our risk of developing this devastating condition. Once we’re equipped with the knowledge, we can share it with our loved ones so they, too, would know what preventive measures to take.
Here’s How You Can Lower Your Risk of Suffering from Brain Injury
In observance of Brain Injury Awareness Month, Veteran Car Donations has compiled ways to lower your risk of suffering from a TBI. With some simple steps, you can protect your head from harm and lead a healthier life overall. Let’s take a look at them now!
- Don’t text or use your phone while driving.
While this is probably common sense, many drivers still couldn’t help but use their phones while driving their cars. If you’re guilty of such, now would be the time to stop the habit.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, using a cell phone while driving creates enormous potential for deaths and injuries, noting that in 2020, 3,142 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. What’s more, a study found out that texting while driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk. Moreover, researchers at the University of Washington revealed that using a mobile phone while driving is similar to having a blood alcohol level of 0.08.
- Make your home safer.
Home safety measures such as installing handrails, placing nonslip mats in the bathroom, covering sharp edges or corners, and having adequate lighting can help avoid falls that could lead to traumatic brain injuries. Make sure to keep your stairs clear of clutter as well.
- Buckle up your seatbelt at all times.
Wearing seatbelts can reduce serious injuries and deaths from crashes by about 50%. That should be enough reason for you to constantly remind yourself to buckle up each time you drive or ride a vehicle.
- Wear a helmet.
Adults and kids alike should always wear a helmet or other protective headgear when riding a bicycle or motorbike. That must also be done when engaging in contact sports like football, boxing, and ice hockey, as well as adrenaline-pumping activities such as snowboarding, skiing, or skateboarding.
- Get regular checkups.
Make sure to visit your doctor for regular checkups and discuss any potential risks of head injuries. Even if you feel completely fine, it’s still possible that they could find something wrong with your health.
Reach Out to Veterans with Brain Injuries and Other Problems
In 2000 and 2021, more than 450,000 of our service members and veterans were diagnosed with traumatic brain injury (TBI), according to the CDC.
If you care for our hurting troops, you can do something to help them. All you have to do is donate any vehicle you no longer need to Veteran Car Donations. We’ll use your donation to improve the lives of suffering veterans, including those afflicted with brain injuries and other service-related illnesses and disabilities.
We’ll have your vehicle auctioned off, with the proceeds used to support the life-improvement programs of our charity partners. These IRS-certified 501(c)(3) nonprofits cater to veterans who are suffering from disabilities and serious illnesses, including mental health disorders, as well as those who are homeless, jobless, and impoverished.
Our charity partners use the funding we give them to provide their beneficiaries with quality health care, financial aid, housing assistance, employment opportunities, family support, educational scholarships, psychotherapy services, and many other benefits.
As our donor, you’ll get to claim the maximum tax deduction in the next tax season. You’ll also receive free pickup and towing service from us wherever you’re residing in the country.
We take almost all types of vehicles, including those that barely run anymore. Head over to this page to get a list of what we usually accept as donations.
