March 2018 is National Brain Injury Awareness Month
Be committed to educating the people all over the country about the effects of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) during the Brain Injury Awareness Month this March. By taking part in raising awareness, you’ll be shedding some light on its serious effects.
What is Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?
Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI, is caused by an extreme bump, blow, or jolt in the head, causing a disruption in the normal brain functions. Falls account for 47 percent of the brain injury-related hospitalizations and death. It can range from mild, which is usually associated with a change in mental state or loss of consciousness for a short period of time (15 minutes or less); moderate, which is associated with loss of consciousness for more than 20 minutes; and severe, which is associated with loss of consciousness for more than six hours and temporary memory loss.
Although not all people lose consciousness after a fall or a head trauma, a person can still suffer a concussion on one part of the brain and cause damage throughout. Do you know that TBI affects 2.5 million people in the United States each year? In fact, it is the leading cause of disability in both children and adults with age ranging from 1 to 44 years old. It is estimated that 153 people die because of brain injury every day.
TBI is also the most common injury among the military workforce. Since our servicemen are constantly exposed to blasts and gunshots, it’s no surprise that they face a high risk of sustaining brain injury in the line of duty. Since 2000, more than 339,462 service members have been found to have TBI. However, veterans shouldn’t be alarmed by its long-term effect because, with proper care and treatment, their conditions will likely improve in time.
What Can You Do to Help Raise Awareness?
The main purpose of observing the National Brain Injury Awareness Month is to educate every individual about the causes, symptoms, and treatment of TBI. Here are some of the practical ways for you to get involved:
- You can put together flyers and distribute them throughout your community. You can ask some friends and neighbors to help you post them within your area and other neighboring places.
- Reaching out using social media platforms is a sure-fire way of spreading awareness. Provide as much information as you can and encourage others to do the same. While you’re at it, try to provide reliable resources, too!
- Be philanthropic in your ways. Perhaps you can try organizing a fundraising activity such as selling home-baked cookies or a clothes donation drive to support brain injury patients.
- Inquire from an expert. Sometimes, the best way to learn about education gaps in the community is through asking. By knowing some facts, you can address the disparity in the awareness and recovery of traumatic brain injury.
- Donate a vehicle to a charity that focuses their efforts on helping veterans all over the country. By donating, you can help non-profit organizations provide easy medical access to ex-servicemen with TBI.
