5 Ways to Help a Veteran Today

Even though most of our former military servicemen and women returned home to their families in one piece following the end of their tours of duty overseas, wounds that aren’t visible to the naked eye are festering inside many of them. They include those veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other mental health issues.

Sadly, you can find many of these veterans trying to drown their sorrows with alcohol or falling into the trap of drug addiction in their attempt to feel “normal” again.

Unless we do something to help them, their condition can only worsen.

What We Can Do to Help

It’s about time we serve those who served us first. The sacrifices they made for our sakes are more than enough reason for us to help ease their plight and lighten the emotional baggage they carry. Veteran Car Donations shares the top 5 ways to help our troubled veterans today:

  1. Pick up their tab at a restaurant.

This is a simple thing to do, but it definitely makes a vet’s day special. You can also offer to pay for their gas or grocery as a way of saying “Thank you” for their invaluable service to our nation.

  1. Volunteer your time at a VA hospital.

Local VA hospitals are happy to accept whatever help they can get. Whether you’re a nurse who wants to help the staff in giving medication or someone who just wants to keep the veterans’ company, your efforts will be greatly appreciated. Some of the veterans there might even share with you their interesting experiences during their time on the battlefield as you spend time with them.

  1. Assist in veteran employment programs.

When veterans are sent home after their deployment, most of them find it hard to reintegrate themselves into the civilian sector. Getting stable and rewarding employment is one of the biggest challenges they have to face. One way to help them is to offer help to those who are having a hard time putting together a resume. Another is to help them rehearse their answers for job interviews.

  1. Hire a veteran

If you own a small business or if you’re in charge of hiring personnel for a large company, don’t hesitate to hire qualified veterans who applied for the job. Doing so will help their transition quicker and easier.

  1. Give veterans a ride to the doctor’s office.

You can volunteer to drive veterans during their doctor’s appointment. You can sign up for this at the Department of Veterans Affair (VA).

Thousands of veterans are still struggling in their daily lives. Your kindness can mean the world to them. Even a simple good deed can help them get out of the dark pit that they find themselves in.
