Catch Transmission Issues Early Before It’s Too Late!
Your car needs a smoothly functioning transition that can spin its wheels at various speed ratios by multiplying engine torque into usable power. While the transmission experiences more wear than any of your vehicle’s mechanical components, many car owners are not inclined to deal with issues concerning their transmission. As a result, they tend to ignore transmission failure symptoms.
However, avoiding the topic won’t prevent you from experiencing transmission trouble. Alternatively, knowing the symptoms of a failing transmission before it fails will lengthen its life and help you save money on repairs or replacements.
Warning Signs of Transmission Failure
At some point, your transmission may experience issues even with a meticulous maintenance schedule. You probably know that transmission repairs don’t come cheap. Do yourself a favor by detecting issues early. Veteran Car Donations has pulled together the following warning signs of transmission failure:
- Unusual burning smell
The transmission fluid is responsible for lubricating the transmission’s moving parts and providing cooling to prevent the unit from burning. Some vehicles have transmissions that have their own oil cooler or mini radiator that transports heat away from the transmission unit.
If your transmission is overheating, it increases friction and corrosive activity in the engine. You’ll get a whiff of burning transmission fluid. Luckily, fixing this problem is easy. It may involve leak repair or transmission fluid flush and change.
- Strange noises
You may have a problem with your transmission if you hear bumping sounds and other noises when you put your car in neutral. You’re lucky if these sounds only signal a need for new transmission fluid. You’ll want a professional to do this for you to avoid causing damage due to overfilling. If the noises persist even after flushing and changing the fluid, you may need to replace your transmission unit or have your car checked out for further service.
- Clutch drag
Extra slack in your clutch pedal makes it difficult for the clutch disc to disengage from the flywheel each time you press it. In such cases, you won’t be able to change gears because the clutch can’t transfer the engine power to the drivetrain. A dragging clutch usually results from a mechanical failure.
You can avoid this issue by keeping your foot off the clutch when pressing your accelerator. You’ll want to use your clutch only when you need to.
Has Your Car Reached Its Retirement Age?
