What’s the Best Way to Get Rid of Your Worn-out Boat?

When you first invested in your faithful sea companion, the last thing on your mind was probably, “How will I dispose of this beauty someday?” Unfortunately, boats — like all good things in life — have an expiration date. When that sad day comes, what will you do with your old boat?

Whether it’s because of the familiar creaking sound that’s gotten louder over the years, or the constant repairs that are starting to take a toll on your wallet, letting go of a vessel is a decision many boat owners would eventually face. Don’t worry, we’re here to help you decide how to say “bon voyage” to your beloved vessel. You can choose from any of these five options:

  1. Sell or trade

Selling or trading in your unwanted boat is always a viable option. You may not make a fortune, but it’s a quick and relatively easy way to dispose of it. If you’re looking to buy a new boat, many dealerships accept trade-ins. This could help you get an attractive deal on your new sea buddy.

There are some downsides though. For instance, finding a buyer or negotiating a trade-in can be time-consuming. Plus, you might need to spend hundreds of dollars to get your vessel in sellable condition, especially if it requires repairs. Lastly, it may have depreciated significantly in value already.

  1. Recycle

Just as you recycle your cans and cardboard, you can do the same for your boat as well! This is an excellent eco-friendly option. Materials like metal, wood, and certain types of plastic can often be repurposed. Many regions have specific boat recycling programs or facilities, making it a pretty straightforward process.

Then again, not all parts of a boat are recyclable, which could lead to additional disposal requirements.

  1. Part it out

Got a boat with some parts still in good condition? Consider stripping it down and selling those valuable pieces. This can be a little labor-intensive, but hey, there’s a good chance you’ll earn more by selling the parts individually.

However, finding buyers for boat parts may take a lot of time. Also, the task can be labor-intensive and may require a certain level of technical knowledge.

  1. Repurpose

Feeling creative? Repurpose your old boat into something cool and unique. It can become a quirky garden feature, a funky piece of playground equipment, or even a bookcase! It’s a fantastic conversation starter, and it keeps the sentimental value of your boat intact.

  1. Donate

Last but definitely not least, you can choose to donate your boat to charity. This is the most meaningful way to bid farewell to your vessel. A lot of nonprofit organizations and charities would be happy to accept your old boat, regardless of its condition.

Besides giving your boat a second life, this option will provide you with a handsome tax write-off if you donate it to an IRS-certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. You’d also be giving back to your community or supporting a cause you believe in.

You Can Use Your Boat to Uplift the Lives of Our Disadvantaged Veterans

If donating sounds like the best option for you, you should remember that not all nonprofits accept boats that are no longer in great shape. Fortunately, this isn’t the case with us at Veteran Car Donations. For as long as your vessel still has some value left, we’ll welcome it with open arms.

We’ll have your boat auctioned off, with the proceeds going directly to our charity partners. Like us, these IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofits are dedicated to improving the living conditions of our former military men and women who are living miserable lives. They are those who are grappling with homelessness due to extreme poverty, unemployment, service-connected disabilities, as well as physical and mental illnesses.

The funds will enable our partners to provide their beneficiaries with housing and financial assistance, employment and livelihood opportunities, family support, free quality health care and medical treatment, psychotherapy services, and other services meant to help them overcome the challenges they’re facing.

You will also benefit from your charitable gift as this will entitle you to claim the maximum tax deduction in the next tax season. We’ll mail you the 100% tax-deductible sales receipt of your boat following its auction sale.

Additionally, we’ll haul off your vessel for free, and it’s up to you to decide when and where we can pick it up and tow it away. Our towing service is available to our donors in all parts of the United States. Don’t worry about the paperwork. We have a team of donation specialists who will take care of everything for you.

Above all, you’ll have the ultimate pleasure and satisfaction of doing something extraordinary that can help uplift the lives of our nation’s heroes.

In case you’re not aware, we accept many other types of vehicles aside from boats. These include cars, RVs, motorbikes, trucks, snowmobiles, and so much more.
