Learn How to Do Fuel Injector Test!
Vehicles from the 80s and newer usually have complex electronic fuel injection systems instead of carburetors. The fuel injection system helps complete the combustion process by spraying the appropriate amount of fuel into the cylinder walls. However, as your fuel injectors age, they’ll start leaking fuel.
If you’re dealing with a bad fuel injector, don’t be surprised to catch symptoms such as white smoke, reduced gas mileage, poor emission, misfiring, erratic engine idling, or engine knocking. A failing fuel injector system can cause a fire outbreak if left unaddressed. Learning how to test your vehicle’s fuel injectors for leaks can go a long way in ensuring your safety on the road and keeping your engine in tip-top condition.
How to Check Your Fuel Injector for Leaks
STEP 1: Start your engine and let it run on idle before inspecting each fuel injector for leaks. If you notice signs of external leakage, be sure to replace your O ring.
STEP 2: Turn off the engine and ensure it sits in Park or neutral gear. Pop the hood and remove your negative battery terminal. If your air filter box is blocking the way, use a screwdriver to unscrew the fasteners that hold it.
STEP 3: Unplug your throttle socket or disconnect your throttle cable. You’ll want to remove all wires along the way carefully.
STEP 4: Disconnect the socket on your injectors, and be sure to unbolt the fuel rail before pulling the rail off with an injector remover. It’s best to leave the fuel lines on the fuel rail. Doing so delivers adequate fuel pressure from your fuel pump.
STEP 5: Grab a syringe that has milliliters and use it to measure the fuel’s pressure.
STEP 6: Use a multimeter to test the voltage on the injection sockets. Most vehicles have injectors with two pins. You wouldn’t want to see variations above 3.70 and 3.89.
STEP 7: Remove the fuel fuse and examine it. You should see PINs 87 and 30. It’s important to note that these main fuel lines and their numbers may not be like other vehicles. Be sure to contact the fuse to ensure your fuel runs steady.
STEP 8: Check the level of fuel that fills up the syringe as you send current to each injector. Take note of each injector’s spraying rate. You can fill it up to 50 ml to obtain a more accurate result.
STEP 9: Record the time it takes for each injector to fill the syringe. Your fuel injectors may leak if they’re spraying too much fuel or if you see large drops.
