Know the Real Costs of Storing Your Boat

Boat storage is part of your boat’s maintenance. Unless you want to keep it out in the open, exposed to the elements all year round, spending for storage is a necessity to keep your boat secured and protected. The larger your boat is, the more you’ll have to end up paying for its storage. You can expect to pay anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a small boat to thousands for a large one.

Your location also plays a part in the cost of storage as areas with lower costs of living generally offer cheaper renting space for your boat’s storage.

The 3 Types of Boat Storage

There are three main types of boat storage, all with different costs. Veteran Car Donations has listed them below alongside their estimated costs.

  1. Dry Boat Storage

This is probably the most popular option for boat owners, especially during winter. Dry storage is when boats are kept in garage-like facilities, just like cars. The price you’re going to pay would depend on how big your boat is. Owners are usually charged monthly. You can likely expect to pay somewhere around $200 to $400.

  1. Outdoor Boat Storage

Inexpensive and easily available, outdoor storage is a place where you can store your boat in a location that’s fenced or secure. This is the more popular option for those living in metropolitan areas.  For outdoor storage, expect to pay around $20 to $50 per foot of the boat. You’ll also need to get it shrink-wrapped to help protect your boat against the weather.

  1. Wet Slip or Boat Slip Rent

In the offseason or summer, you can opt to just keep your boat at the marina. It’s the cheapest option, and you’ll have easy access to your boat. However, you have to bear in mind that your boat will be exposed to the elements 24 hours a day. Costs can range from $12/ft per year to $240/ft per year, with an average of roughly $50/ft per year
