6 Tips to Keep Your Vinyl Boat Seats Mildew-Free
If you’re a boating enthusiast, you’d probably agree that there’s nothing quite like getting off the highway and out into the water. While your vessel allows you to enjoy numerous aquatic adventures, it also requires constant maintenance and care. Constant exposure to harsh natural elements such as sun rays, saltwater, rain, and wind can take a toll on your boat’s structures, including its vinyl seats.
Most boat manufacturers choose vinyl for seats because of the material’s ability to withstand hot and wet conditions. Unfortunately, it’s not immune to mildew growth. If the fungus has marred your once-beautiful vinyl seats, do not fret. Veteran Car Donations shares a few tips to help you get rid of it.
- Gather your cleaning materials.
You need to get the right products and equipment for the job. These include the following:
- Soft nylon brush
- Bleach-free mold and mildew stain remover
- Marine spray with UV protectants
- Magic eraser sponge
- Microfiber cloths
- Spray the mold remover on the seats.
Since mildew can develop in gaps and seams, ensure full coverage while spraying the mold remover on your vinyl seats. Let the formula sit based on the recommended time on the product’s label. If you’re dealing with stubborn stains, you may have to give the cleaner more than 5 minutes to work its wonders. The longer soaking time allows the product to break down the mildew and makes it easier for you to clean your seats.
- Scrub, scrub, scrub.
Grab your soft-bristled nylon toothbrush and start scrubbing once you’ve given the cleaner enough time to soak the vinyl seats. Since vigorous scrubbing can leave scratches on the vinyl material, be sure to brush gently. You won’t have to put too much elbow grease into scrubbing the surface if you’re using a high-quality cleaner.
- Wipe away the debris.
Use a microfiber cloth to wipe off the debris that formed on sections with serious mildew infestation. This type of cloth won’t tear up your seats while you’re cleaning them in circular motions. You may have to use several microfiber cloths to cover all areas.
- Repeat the process.
You can’t expect heavy mildew buildup to come off the first time. Unless you remove the mildew in just one go, you may have to repeat the entire process several times from spraying the cleaner on the seats to wiping the debris off.
- Use the magic eraser.
If a patch of mildew doesn’t go away, grab your magic eraser sponge. Keep in mind that this tool has to be wet before applying it. While it may take a couple of passes before you get the desired results, avoid pressing too hard when you’re using the magic eraser.
