Top 3 Mental Health Issues Veterans Face Today
Are you aware of the top 3 mental health issues U.S. veterans face today? Did you know that although many of our nation’s heroes come back home in one piece, many of them are shattered on the inside?
The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that nearly 1 in 4 active-duty members of our armed forces exhibited signs of a mental health condition during a 2014 study. For this reason, Veteran Car Donations encourages everyone to learn more about these conditions and how to spot them.
The 3 Primary Mental Health Problems that Afflict Vets
Our troops often feel isolated from their loved ones during the duration of their deployment. Moreover, their harrowing battlefield experiences traumatize not a few of them. It takes a great deal of effort on their part to resist these overwhelming feelings even after they arrive home for good. Left unaddressed, these mental conditions affect not just the veterans but their families as well.
Let’s dive in and take a closer look at the top 3 mental health issues veterans face today:
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
This is usually caused by a violent blow to a person’s head or body which could result in long-term complications or even death. An individual who suffers from TBI experiences such physical symptoms as sleeping problems, loss of balance, loss of consciousness, nausea, vomiting, speech problems, headaches, fatigue, confusion, and disorientation.
Furthermore, its effects on the sensory and cognitive aspects include blurred vision, changes in the sense of smell, bad taste in the mouth, hypersensitivity to sound or light, ringing in the ears, memory lapses, concentration problems, mood swings, and anxiety. Regardless of the degree of severity, these symptoms may manifest immediately or a few days or weeks after a traumatic event.
- Depression
This is a common mental condition among veterans who lost a friend or a family member or those who sustained serious combat-related injuries. Depression is nothing like the occasional feelings of being down in the dumps. A person who suffers from depression experiences an overwhelming feeling of sadness or hopelessness as well as a loss of interest in any of their daily activities.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Individuals can have PTSD if they experienced or witnessed major traumatic events such as military combat, a natural disaster, a violent assault, a serious accident or a terrorist attack. Although its symptoms may vary in severity, the most common telltale signs of PTSD are feelings of anger, guilt, shame, detachment from others, lack of interest in anything that a person previously enjoyed, recurrent memories of or nightmares about the traumatic event, extreme physical reactions to reminders of the traumatic event, flashbacks, aggressive behavior, trouble concentrating, and being always on guard for danger.
