What is the ROTC?
Are you unfamiliar with the ROTC program? Perhaps you’ve heard about it but you’re not really sure what it’s all about except for the fact that it is an elective curriculum that can be taken by some students along with their required college classes. If you’re one those folks who don’t have ready answers to the question, “What is the ROTC?”, Veteran Car Donations sheds light on one of the best ways to prepare young adults for a career in the military.
ROTC, or Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, is a college-level program that’s offered in over 1,700 colleges and universities all over the country. Its point of origin is the National Defense Act of 1916, which allows high schools as well as colleges to have military training instructors and have funding from an ROTC organization.
Any college student who’s planning to have a future career in the military can begin to explore any of its specific branches by enrolling in ROTC programs that are provided by the Army, Navy, or the Air Force. Although the U.S. Coast Guard doesn’t have an ROTC initiative, students who are interested may explore a similar training program called the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI). Those who are more inclined towards a future position in the Armed Forces have the opportunity to gain exposure to the rigidities of military training by taking Junior ROTC (JROTC) in high school.
Furthermore, each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces has its own take on their respective ROTC programs, and each maintains a set of qualifications for students who wish to participate in this elective curriculum. Those who make the cut will have their college tuition covered by the ROTC program of their choice. However, they’re required to fulfill active duty services in their chosen military branch once they’ve graduated.
What is the Goal of the ROTC?
Aside from its main goal of preparing students for future service as officers in any of the U.S. military branches, the ROTC also equips them with the necessary tools, leadership training, and experiences that will allow them to succeed in any competitive environment.
