World Mental Health Day: Ways to Celebrate
Taking care of our mental health is as important as looking out for our physical health. Sadly, many people don’t seem to care for their mental wellbeing and have little awareness of what mental health is all about. What’s even more unfortunate is that many of those who develop mental health disorders refuse to seek treatment due to the stigma associated with their condition.
Today, there are about 450 million people in the world who suffer from a variety of psychological conditions, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Around 800,000 people worldwide commit suicide every year, many of them due to mental health problems.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, citing figures from the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately one in five adults in the U.S. (46.6 million) experiences mental illness in a given year.
To raise global awareness of the problem, the World Federation for Mental Health collaborated with the WHO in 1992 to create World Mental Health Day every 10th of October. Since then, more than 100 countries have been taking part in the annual celebration, joining forces to make mental health a worldwide priority.
On this day, local and national events are held in the participating nations. These normally include educational seminars, public service announcements, and awarding programs to individuals or organizations that have played significant roles in tackling mental health issues. Mental health professionals also mark the day by working together to educate the public on the importance of caring for their mental wellbeing as well as those of their loved ones.
How You Can Celebrate World Mental Health Day
Perhaps, one of the simplest gestures you can do during this special day is to spread important mental health information to the public via social media. It’s a good idea to remind people to keep their mental health in check regularly.
On a more personal level, if you know someone who’s facing a serious issue in life right now, reach out to them. Try to encourage them to share their problems with you and listen to them. Let them know that you’re always available when they need someone to vent out their feelings. Be sure to show your sincerity in offering assistance.
World Mental Health Day may also be the perfect time for you to rejuvenate your mind. We know how stressful life can be for anyone, which is why taking a break from your daily work routine is a must. Read a book, take yourself to a spa, meditate, listen to your favorite tunes – anything to relax your mind.
You can also celebrate the day by thanking mental health professionals in your area for their service and dedication to help others. They’ll be happy to learn that their efforts are appreciated by others.
Help Our Vets Deal with Mental Health Problems
Thousands of our former troops developed mental illnesses while still in active service. With all the tragic events they encountered in the foreign conflict areas where they had been deployed, many of them ended up traumatized and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and other mental health woes. In many cases, their condition remains untreated and continues to afflict them up to now following their separation from the service.
One way you can help our veterans overcome mental and emotional distress is by donating a vehicle you no longer need to Veteran Car Donations.
We have a lifelong commitment to serving our nation’s heroes through car donations. We do that by auctioning off all the vehicles donated to us, thus transforming them into fund-generating tools. Any vehicle that you have – regardless of its type, age, or condition – can generate funds to help our IRS-certified 501(c)3 nonprofit partners in providing our needy veterans with a range of services, including mental health treatment and counseling.
To show you our appreciation for your generosity, we’ll deliver to you your 100% tax-deductible receipt after we sell your donated vehicle at auction. You can use this receipt to claim your tax deduction in the next tax season. Moreover, you’ll also get to enjoy our free pickup and towing services and our quick, convenient, and no-paperwork donation process.
If you’d like to make a difference in the lives of needy veterans in your community right now, fill out our online donation form or call us at 877-594-5822. You can make your donation wherever you are in the United States since we have car donation programs in all 50 states.
