Why Do the Vets Need Our Help?
After years of serving the country to uphold the freedom and security that we all enjoy, many of our veterans have returned home from their overseas deployment with a slew of problems — serious physical injuries, Traumatic Brain Injury, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and other mental health troubles.
Moreover, even uninjured veterans have to face the serious problem of unemployment and lack of support, making it difficult for them to transition to civilian life. Unable to find a source of income to feed themselves and their family, a number of these former soldiers have become homeless, surviving on the mercies of passersby as they beg for food.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimated that there were 39,471 homeless veterans on any given night in 2016.
Based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics, among the 453,000 unemployed veterans in 2016, 60 percent were age 45 and over, 36 percent were 25 to 44, and 4 percent were 18 to 24.
As reported on the Veterans Data Central, 395,007 veterans lived in Colorado as of 2014 records. With a 7.5 percent veteran unemployment rate, 6.5 percent of Colorado veterans lived in poverty and about 950 were homeless. Furthermore, 77,191 veterans had service-related disabilities.
